Working on land

Well, we've finally started doing something more than cutting down trees on our land, we've actually got the beginning of a structure. Check it out on our land blog at http://www.xanga.com/twistedthyme

Kyle's Birthday Camp Out

We went out to dinner with mom and dad, then after Richard, Kyle, Miles and Kyle went back out to the land and stayed the night in a tent. They had a fire and played games, they had a real good time, all though Richard keeps telling me I owe him one.

Working on our land

After waiting all summer for the logger to come cut the trees on our land, we have given up and went out to cut the trees ourselves.
First we sent the boys out for three days to cut down the smaller trees, they camped out from Tuesday till Friday when we met them down there.
We had lots of help from our family as well.

The Four Wheel Trail

We first went out and started cutting a four wheel
trail around two sides of the property. Pictured
here to the left side of the picture. Picture was taken April 4th 2006, date on camera was set wrong.

April 4, 2006 We cut down 30 trees today. I left early with Chad and Cory to take them to a finance class they started taking. Richard and Kyle stayed for another hour or so.
April 6, 2006 Richard cutting trees. We had no equipment to move the logs, so we just cut limbs and drug them out the an opening at the end of the driveway. For the first time we spotted two yellow butterflies. Before we started clearing any of the land, we hadn't heard or seen any wildlife. We had seen some rutting marks, left by deer or wild hogs.

Our first cordwood building

We've been coming up with ideas to build with. Richard just read a small book on cordwood and we wanted to try it out on a small scale first. So we built the boys this cabin in our backyard.
We really didn't know the correct way to build cordwood, so we just kinda figured it out as we went along. We used clay, pine needles and quickcrete for the mortar mix. The roof is strong black plastic over a spiral of logs. There is the door you see and one window inside.
